Detailed Itinerary

The itinerary below is to help you begin planning the trip to Canada. It isn't set in stone, however, so it is very flexible and is subject to change.

Getting there

The distance from Toronto to Prince Edward Island is approximately 1000 miles, or 1600 kilometres. There are several ways for us to get from one place to another. The most economical and convenient way is to fly from Toronto to Halifax, then rent a car and drive from Halifax to PEI. The biggest advantage of doing this is we won't miss crossing over to the Island, which can be done by ferry or over Confederation Bridge. Also, since we'll be in Halifax, we can spend a few days travelling through the rest of Nova Scotia, which is one of the most beautiful locations in the country. (The first idea was staying in Halifax before visiting PEI but if we will be stay there after PEI, travelmates do not want to stay in Halifax but want to visit PEI can go home after PEI.) A round-trip plane ticket from Toronto to Halifax costs about $350 CAD plus taxes. Our other option would be to travel by train. However, it's more exhausting, it would mean a longer trip, and there would be more expense.

Section #1

Niagara Falls We would spend roughly thirteen days in Toronto and in other locations in southern Ontario. We will be visiting filming locations for Anne and RTA there -- for example, Westfield Heritage Village; the township of Uxbridge, where King Farm (Nesbitt Farm) and Pine Grove Church are located (this was also the spot where Avonlea Village was built); and Pickering Village Museum. In addition we may drive down to Niagara Falls and do some more sightseeing in Toronto (CN Tower, Casa Loma, Spadina House), besides attending the three-day-long Avonlea Convention (AvCon) 2007.

We would be staying at the apartments on the campus of York University. They are well-equipped with a kitchenette and living room space on one floor, and a bathroom and bedroom on the second floor. An apartment would work for two or three people, as there is a sofa on the first floor. In the basement, there are washers and dryers, in case someone wants to do some laundry. There is a grocery store near the campus which is open until 8 PM, along with a mall. The university is on the outskirts of the city, which is reachable within an hour by shuttle bus and subway. I stayed there during AvCon2005 and was very pleased with the accommodations. The price is $72 CAD per night per person. If one stays for more than a week, it is $36 CAD per night for two people in an apartment, plus taxes.

Activities:

  • Westfield Heritage Village (a Sunday early afternoon)
  • Pickering Village Museum, Uxbridge (Pine Grove Church, maybe King Farm) - a whole day
  • Bala Museum - Avonlea related museum - a whole day, it's a few 100 kms from Toronto
  • CN Tower, Spadina House, Casa Loma in the city of Toronto
  • Niagara Falls - a whole day
  • Avonlea Convention 2007 - 3 days

Section #2

We will then fly to Halifax, as it is cheaper and faster than traveling by car or train. We'll be traveling to PEI by rental car, mainly so we can try out Confederation Bridge and the ferry.

PEI has a lot of well-known places and events. To visit everything will take quite a few days.

Our options for accomodation are vast here. Personally, I'd like stay in a cottage. Cottages can hold six to eight people and include a bathroom, living space, and a kitchen so we can cook for our ourselves. Below are some photos of the various cottages on the Island...

They are fairly inexpensive, costing about $150-300 CAD a week per person. We must book these in good time; the better ones are booked about six months in advance, and some places ask for a deposit.

Our other options for accomodation on the Island include apartments and hotel room. Click here for a full summary, including rates.

It's possible to visit the entire Island within three or four days, but that doesn't give us any time to relax. My suggestion is we stay there for eight to ten days: we can take four or five days off to relax, perhaps lie on the beaches of our beloved Island.

The best way to travel throughout the Island is to rent a car, as there aren't many other possibilities in that regard. While PEI offers motor coaches, they don't run frequently, and you can't go everywhere via coach. To rent a car for four people with taxes and insurance is approximately $110 CAD a week per person.

Flag There is lots to see on PEI! First, there is Green Gables in Cavendish, formerly home to the Webb family, who were relatives of LMM. There is also the site of the MacNeill home, where Maud spent her childhood. There are also various museums and exhibitions in Cavendish and surrounding towns. I also recommend visiting Charlottetown where is located; and I'd like to check out Anne of Green Gables: The Musical. There are also many other well-known locations from Anne, Road to Aavonlea, and the Emily of New Moon series. (Although most of each were shot in either Toronto or elsewhere in Ontario, .) We may also visit Avonlea Village, a miniature town meant to replicate the Avonlea that Maud envisioned in her literature; PEI National Park; or Orwell Corner Historical Village museum, where there was some filming done.

Section #3

There is a possibility we may stay in Nova Scotia for a few days, as it is a gorgeous province with beautiful seacoasts and ports. If we do stay for a few days, it'll be at a bed and breakfast.

The details for this part of the trip have not been finalized yet. Please watch this space for more information.
